
“The father of modern linguistics”
Noam Chamsky was born on December 7, 1928, in Philladelphia, Pennsylvania. His undergraduate and graduate years were spent at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his PHD in linguistic in 1995. He attended a progressive elementary school, where he wrote for the school newspaper. His first article was about the fall of Barcelona, during the Spanish Civil War (Barsky, 9-17).
Chomsky joined the staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995 and in 1961 was appointed full professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
